Experience
Trustee, San Diego County Board of Education: Served 12 years on the San Diego County Board of Education elected by voters in South San Diego County.
- In partnership with SWC Board President established the SWC Alternative Funding Task Force composed of the mayors of all cities in the South Bay, the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce and other business and community leaders to assist Southwestern College in its efforts to revise current funding formulas to increase its annual allocation and to develop partnerships with businesses to supplement revenues for educational programs.
- In collaboration with the South County Economic Development Council (SCEDC), the UCSD San Diego Dialogue and Southwestern College, planned and conducted the South County Industry Cluster Symposium and the Symposium for Expanding Industry for the South Bay. These two symposia brought business, education, local government and community leaders together to discuss strategies for enhanced economic development in South County and improving the economic and educational opportunities for South County communities.
- Facilitated the exploration of partnerships between Southwestern College and UCSD to establish joint educational programs with the UCSD School of Pharmacy and the UCSD Medical Center.
- Facilitated collaboration between Sweetwater High School District, Southwestern College, San Diego State University and UC San Diego in efforts to increase the number of high school students pursuing higher education.

- Served one term each CCBE Vice President, President Elect and President.
Sweetwater Union High School District
- Elected to serve 9 years on the Sweetwater High School Board of Trustees
- Pioneered joint use facility agreements between the City of Chula Vista and the Sweetwater High School District
- Established the first successful computer technology based student drop-out prevention and recovery program in the District (PLATO)
- Initiated the policies for Sweetwater High School District discouraging social promotions, require students to be enrolled pre-algebra by the eight grade and prepare students to pursue higher education or workforce training.
